Welcome to the Demonstration "FREE TANER & FREE RIGHTS DEFENDERS"

When: Saturday, November 18th, 2017, at 11.00

Where: Medborgarplatsen, Stockholm

We got a bit on the way, but it's not over yet. Now we have to act again with the goal to release Amnesty's Chairman in Turkey  and to achieve that he and all the ”Istambul 10” group members gets free from all charges!

The trial held on October 25th against the "Istanbul 10" Amnesty Group led to the result that eight human rights defenders, who had been detained for 113 days, were finally realised - with conditional on a  pending trial. One of them was Idil Eser, Amnesty's Secretary General in Turkey. The two foreign citizens Ali Gharavi (Sweden) and Peter Steudtner (Germany) were allowed to leave the country and did not need to appear in the next trial. Both have now left Turkey and are in safety with their families.

Amnesty's Chairman in Turkey, Taner Kılıç, who has been detained in the city of Izmir since June, attended the trial in Istanbul on October 25 via video link. The court decided to include Taner in the charges of "Istanbul 10", which means that his case shall be prooved together with the others.

However, a separate trial was held against Taner on October 26th in Izmir. The court in Izmir decided that Taner should still be detained.

NEW TRIAL  - ACT NOW!

The next trial against Taner and "Istanbul 10" will be held on November 22nd.  All of them run the risk of being convicted of up to 15 years prison. We must prevent that!

Amnesty International Stockholm and  ”Turkey-06” Group invite all Amnesty Groups and activists in Stockholm to partecipate to the demonstration at Medborgarplatsen by  holding candles. We want to show that the whole world keeps an eye on Turkey.

Amnesty demands that Taner shall be released and that all charges against him and "Istanbul 10" shall be suspended.

WE CELEBRATED AMNESTY TURKEY DIRECTOR IDIL ESERS BIRTHDAY AT MEDBORGARPLATSEN SQUARE, STOCKHOLM

After the failed military coup, the situation in Turkey has deteriorated. About 50,000 people have been deprived of their lfreedom, hundreds of associations have been forced to shut down and all independent media have been silenced. At the same time, the Turkish state has classified tens of thousands of lawyers, doctors, police officers and teachers as terrorists, a situation which led to the loss of many jobs.

On July 5th ten human rights defenders were arrested. Among these were Amnesty Turkey's Director Idil Eser, as well as the Swedish IT consultant Ali Gharavi. That arrest came a month after Amnesty Turkey's President Taner Kiliç was arrested and prosecuted for false allegations.

On Saturday 14th of October, the International Action Day was launched with focus on Turkey. Amnesty 06 Turkey Group started the action day at 14:00 at Medborgarplatsen Square, Stockholm, and celebrated Esers birthday. The manifestation was led by the Amnesty Stockholm chairman Karin Lehnér.

Amnesty Sweden presidential spokesman Ami Hedenborg talked about the human rights situation in Turkey, as well as the trial against Kilic, Eser, and other deprived human rights defenders in the country:

After the failed military coup, the situation in Turkey has deteriorated. At the same time, the Turkish state has classified tens of thousands of lawyers, doctors, police officers and teachers, etc. as terrorists, causing therefore the lost of jobs for many people.

On July 5th ten human rights defenders were arrested and on July 18th six of them were kept in prison. Amnesty International 06-Turkey Group welcomes You to: A thematic reunion focusing on Turkey "WHERE IS TURKEY GOING?"

Host: Amnesty International Stockholm, 06-Turkey Group
Date: Saturday, 12 August, from 14.00 to 18.00
Address: Amnesty International, Alsnögatan 11, Stockholm

Background: After the failed coup d’état, the situation in Turkey has deteriorated. Independent media has been silenced, about 50 000 people have been detained. Hundreds of associations have been forced to close down. Tens of thousands of lawyers, doctors, policemen, teachers and academics have been labeled as “terrorists” and have lost their jobs.
On 5 July, 10 human rights defenders were arrested. The arrest occurred a month after the Chair of Amnesty International Turkey, Taner Kiliç, was arrested and prosecuted on trumped up charges. On 18 July, six of the arrested were remanded in custody, among them were Idil Eser, Director of Amnesty International Turkey, as well as Swedish It-expert Ali Gharavi and German national Peter Steudtner.

At the same time, the armed conflict between the PKK and the Turkish security forces in Turkish Kurdistan is ongoing. According to one estimate, at least half a million people have been forced to leave Kurdish areas, because of long curfews, violence, destruction and forced displacement.

The reports that the land and churches of Assyrians and Syriacs are being confiscated is shocking as well.
Many of us feel that democracy is being infringed in Turkey. To work for freedom, we strongly believe in creating networks with other organisations who share our views on democracy and human rights. Friendly discussions and criticism play a key role in the country’s development towards those goals. It opens up for dialogue and communication. For that reason, we welcome interested organisations and politicians to participate in this project day.
